World Book Day

Dear Parents/Carers,

R.E World Book Day: Thursday 2nd March 2017

We are very excited about this year's World Book Day, and hope to make this whole school event bigger and better than ever before. The purpose of this day is to encourage pupils to read regularly and widely for pleasure as part of our whole school literacy initiative. Reading is an absolutely crucial aspect of raising attainment and developing skills across the whole curriculum, and we would encourage all pupils and parents to get involved in whatever way possible.

This year pupils can take part in a number of ways, details of which will be coming through Form Tutors. Below is just a flavour of how parents and carers can support the pupils on the day:

• KS3 pupils can come to school in fancy dress; a costume related to a book with House Points up for grabs. Look out for Staff in their costumes too, and take part in a character hunt
• Pre-loved Book Embargo; we are asking pupils to bring in and donate unwanted books for a book sale on the day. Proceeds will go to new titles for Accelerated Reader
• Book cover design competition in Form Time: winning entries will be published in Made in Madeley. Judged by Miss Leath and Mrs Stockdale
• Book themed cake competition: hugely popular in previous years. See Mrs Snape for more details!
• £1 World Book Day tokens will be distributed to KS3
• Entrance hall display on ‘The Books that Changed My Life': parents, pupils and staff are invited to fill in a template for this inspirational display work. Template obtained from Form Tutors
• Accelerated Reader app competition for Years 7 and 8
• Year group competitions and quizzes on the day
• 'Guess the celeb' reading display in the entrance hall
• Book themed lessons across the curriculum throughout the day
• Readathon

If you would like any further details then please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs A.Skelding
